Tell us about opinion have you had to defend. How has this affected your belief system? I chuckle to myself every time I think about this.

I am perceived as a mild-mannered, intelligent individual until I mention that I am involved in iflery. It is interesting to watch someone’s expression change. It is as if I instantaneously grew a pair of horns and a sharp set of claws.

Believe me this gets worst; I am a member of the NRA. I try to tell these folks that I belong to the NRA to fire my rifle. “Oh my God! You fire real guns? with real bullets?!?” they remark with a perplexed look on their face. Besides having horns and claws, I now possess a tail and leathery wings.

This is how it began five years ago. I had played on a soccer team for several years. As I grew older I began having difficulty playing soccer because of shortness of breath. I was diagnosed as having mild asthma which ended my soccer career and eliminated my participation in most physical sports.

Shortly afterward, during a Boy Scout summer camp, I participated in riflery at their shooting range. This was the first time I had ever touched a fire arm.

To my amazement, I won the camp’s first place award for marksmanship. I was more than eager when a friend of mine asked me if I would like to join a shooting club. My parents were wary when I asked to join the rifle club. My mother feared guns, but my father felt there was no problem with trying this sport.

Gratefully, he gave me the opportunity to try rifle marksmanship, despite secretly hoping that I would quit. Both of my parents were afraid of what people would think about their son’s involvement with guns. Like my parents a majority of people believe that all firearms are dangerous to our society. All they remember are the hysterical news releases of street violence and injured children.

I am often asked how many deer I’ve shot. Frankly, I could never bring myself to injure another living creature and neither would most of the competitors I have met.

Yet, I keep finding myself defending the sport from all of the misconceptions that surround it. Most people have developed a negative impression of the sport and I have found that these prejudices are difficult, if not impossible, to rectify.

Because of this conflict, I have become an open minded individual. I express my opinions without reservation, and I have learned to accept opinions and viewpoints contrary to my own. I do not intend to alter what I enjoy because of the ignorance of friends and acquaintances. If people have a negative view of me simply because of the sport I am active in, then they must be so superficial that they cannot see the person who I really am.

I am no longer apprehensive of being perceived as a gun toting, trigger happy fanatic, even though I still endeavor to educate my friends and relatives on the beauty of this sport.

How will you explore your intellectual and academic interests at the University of Pennsylvania? Please answer this question given the specific undergraduate school to which you are applying. (400-650 words)

Listen to your feet pounding the pavement, your breath coming in bursts, your heart leaping and dropping and starting and stopping, all at the same time. You look back in time to see the lights change, to see the words flicker from “walk” to “don't walk” as soon as your legs find the stable ground of the opposite sidewalk. Both the road you've left behind and the one that lies ahead are pathways paved with possibility, but the crossing―the moment of intersection between connecting trails―forms the basis of discovery. The crossroads present a challenge, a test of endurance that makes the heart beat faster with the thrill of inhabiting the world that exists in-between. Here, at the corner of knowledge and curiosity, of innovation and research, of debate and analysis, sits the University of Pennsylvania.

Its 302 acres form a juncture of crisscrossing paths that offers the freedom to explore seemingly divergent fields of interest. As a student of the College of Arts & Sciences, I would have the chance to simultaneously pursue my passion for social sciences like politics and artistic ventures like photography. During my four years at Penn, I would take advantage of the kind of interdisciplinary study encouraged by the College, taking courses like “Contemporary African Politics” while also engaging in classes like“Social Choice Theory” and “Ritual Communication”. The“One University” policy would enable me to explore courses from any of its twelve interconnected schools, giving me the unique opportunity to take even graduate-level courses as part of my undergraduate career. The inevitability of crossing paths with students representing every interest and culture imaginable is just one of the centralized campus's gifts to every Penn undergraduate. As a member of a student body that reflects the diversity, I would participate in the vibrant debate and intellectual discussion encouraged by differences in belief, opinion, and ideology. My own background as the product of an intersection between Eastern Europe and Hispanic cultures would allow me to contribute meaningfully to this conversation, enabling me to offer a new perspective while cultivating my own diversity of ideas. Meanwhile, because of the “Penn Integrates Knowledge” program, I would have access to world-renowned professors who embody the University's spirit of cross-disciplinary study. Learning from pioneers of the social sciences like Michael L. Platt would increase my understanding of real-world applications of these interconnections, giving me the tools to construct my own pathway towards a well-rounded education that excites my interests.

As a Penn undergraduate, I would explore the confluence of human connection and behavior by eventually pursuing my studies at the Annenberg School for Communication. Here, I would study not only the philosophical theory behind communication but also develop analytical skills to put this knowledge into practice. The University's emphasis on balance―between disciplines, between practical application and contextual study―would be mirrored in my curriculum here at the Annenberg School. Opportunities for independent study and internships would allow me to extend my learning beyond the walls of the classroom, giving me the freedom to explore the content production and research on the intersections of humanities studies. Following the pathway of a Penn education at Annenberg would, according to one alumna of the College, prepare me to “step into the world and challenge those around [me],” giving me the courage to “engage in meaningful conversation and, in doing so,move society forward.”

With both feet planted firmly at the junction of my fields of interest, my four years at Penn would allow me to graduate as a well-rounded student not just of the College, but also of the world. Here, armed with the freedom to exercise curiosity, I would dare to embrace the thrill of exploring overlapping disciplines. As I navigate the limitless pathways crisscrossing Penn's intellectual landscape, I would chart my own unique route to discovery.

Dear _,

Putting on my first pair of black ballet shoes at the tender age of 6 brings a smile to my face. Little did I realise at that time the joy, passion and sheer delight it has given me.

My interest in dance started at the age of 6 years old in my local ballet class. It fascinates me in the way we can move without speaking with just the emotion on ones face and the movement created to show such feeling. My passion lies in dance, as this is what I have always wanted to do. I have chosen to study dance at university as I would like to take this path to find my future career.

Ballet is my most prominent form of dance as I feel that this is my strongest dance style. It is so expressive, graceful and leaves so much inspiration. I take two one hour classes outside of school to develop my skills as a ballerina; one of which is a private lesson. In these lessons I am working towards achieving my intermediate exam on the RAD examination board, which I will be taking in summer . This shows the commitment I have to attend these classes. These lessons have improved my pointe work and posture tremendously. The classes give me so much fulfilment and at the end of each class feel as though I have achieved something, improving after every class.

I also attend “______ _______ Stage School”; this gives me the opportunity to broaden my ability to dance in other styles of dance. Every week I take classes in Gymnastics, Ballet, Modern, Tap and Drama. Each class helps me to improve and challenges my ability. Modern helps me to improve my stamina, endurance and technical ability, while tap is helping me to improve my co-ordination. Whilst attending “______ ______” I have achieved my bronze medal in gymnastic dance and Grade 6 ballet. In January 20_ I am looking to accomplish my Intermediate ballet examination on the IDTA exam board. I am also working at Grade 5 standard in both Modern and tap classes. With “______ ______ Stage School” I have performed at my local theatre “The ______ Swan” in June . This gave me the opportunity to perform in front of an audience in new styles of dance including line dancing and a Caribbean style. I will also be dancing here in June 20_.

At school I voluntarily help in a GCSE dance class to help my teacher. Last year my teacher was pregnant, so I taught 20 students their set solo for their dance GCSE exam. This gave me great experience and confidence as I was able to work with the students to help them with a subject I have such a passion for. This year I am going to be organising a dance class for the new year Seven’s, and then choreograph a routine for them to perform in our gym and dance show at school.

Recently at school I have become elected as Head of Year 10. In this capacity I will be constantly liaising with the form groups of Year 10 and discussing what changes they would like within the school community. Also as part of this important role I must organise events for their year group: with their help and support. I was chosen from many applicants who applied for this position due to me being a good role model, influential, organised and enthusiastic. In July this year I ran a workshop for Year 2’s in dance. I spent the day teaching over 100 children the art of Maypole dancing. I also received a very prestigious ‘Head Teachers Commendation’ certificate. This is given to only one student each year in each subject. I received this for my contribution to dance. The school I attend at present specialises in Performing Arts and Technology. I have also volunteered to assist in a Year 6 Technology Day, Year 6 Induction Evenings and Year 10 Team Building Day.

My A level choices were chosen around the subject of dance. I am studying Performing Arts, Dance and Philosophy and Ethics. I chose Performing Arts as this included dance, drama and music. I particularly enjoyed creating a performance in the style of Lloyd Newson. The way he used taboo subjects, risks and humour, allowed me to develop my understanding of dance, to create an original piece of contemporary dance. The reason I chose Philosophy and Ethics is not only because I find it interesting but also to improve my essay writing skills.

Outside of school I work part time at _______ Pharmacy, where I have been for a year now. My duties include customer care, being able to work within a team, cash handling and giving medical advice to customers.

Every week I also attend a church youth group for 11 to 18 year olds. Here I am able to get involved with the local community with projects such as ‘Lighthouse’. This is a Christian summer school for children aged 4 to 11. Here I work as a volunteer during the first week of the schools summer holidays. As this will be my last year here I will also be helping to raise money for a group of friends to go out to Kenya. To do this we will need to organise fundraising events to support their journey.

University life, I believe, will be challenging, engaging and will give me opportunities to pursue my love of dance.

Yours sincerely,

Personal Statement

Program Applied: M. D. in Clinical Medicine/Gastroenterology

To strive to be among the top 100 in my field has always been my aspiration. For the materialization of this aspiration, I have dedicated all my enthusiasm and energy to my academic endeavors―both my studies and research―over the past few years. However, to my dismay, the unsatisfactory research conditions in China have caused the research and the therapeutic level in the field of my specialization, namely clinical medicine /Gastroenterology, to lag behind those of the developed countries in the West by at least 10 years. Many of the original ideas that I have developed on certain issues in my field cannot be fully put into practice on account of the limitations in personnel, experimental facilities and research funds. Consequently, I strongly wish that I can be admitted into your esteemed university to undertake an advanced degree program in clinical medicine & gastroenterology.

I have cherished a deep and long yearning for a chance to study at your university. As early as the years when I was an undergraduate at the Department of Medicine of XX (Provincial) Medical University, I had a chance to read the book The Reach of Helicobacter Pylori edited by some professors of your university which influenced me to take up the study of digestive diseases as my area of specialization. Later, during my Master’s program, I focused on the development of the chronic stomach disease (gastrosia) and the incidence of the gastric cancer. The comprehensive research and practice that I have performed in this area further reinforce my determination to seek advanced studies at your university when there should be an opportunity. This is because your esteemed university enjoys a very high academic reputation for the research work you have carried out in the field of digestive disease study. This ensures tha

P。S(Personal Statement):

1、RL(推荐信)

2、Essay(文书)

3、PS(个人陈述)

Dear _,

People once asked me: “Why did you choose architecture?” I couldn’t give a simple answer for that. Maybe it was because I like painting and construction since childhood. I also earnestly yearn to create beautiful things on my own and architecture can satisfy my imagination in space, materials, and color. My born interest in this sector is also because of my parents, who are both structural engineer and electrical engineer, influencing me gradually and unconsciously since I was a kid and giving me perceptual knowledge in the field. After my five-year study in the Department of Architecture, and one-year work experience in architectural design, I ask myself this same question. The result is that aside from the factors mentioned above, what really makes me choose architecture is its intrinsic appeal, which is just like the maxim written inside the building of the Department of Architecture: “Architecture is the combination of art and technology.”

Perhaps when a person is engaged in what his keen interest blossoms, he will never feel tired, instead he would feel motivated and have an enriching experience. Five years‘ academic study in the School of Architecture and Arts of University of _ transformed my instinctive excitement and imagination about architecture into systematic knowledge and comprehensive understanding. This transformation, first of all, lies in my skills in the fine arts. Differing from my previous mere interest in fine arts, the study of architecture makes me begin to ponder on how to draw using aesthetic elements from fine arts such as color, lighting and composition to apply to architecture. I was so dedicated to such brainstorming and imagination that I would always work around the clock in the studio for days on end. Secondly, the study of basic architectural courses, such as architectural structure, mechanics and materials science, makes me realize that architecture not only gives importance on aesthetics, but also on the more essential functionality and practicality. In that process, I realized that architecture is not only an art, but also more importantly a sort of technology. Five years of college study gives me a deeper comprehension of architecture, that is, architecture is also part of other cultures - it is subject to other cultures‘ influence, and at the same time it influences other cultures.

Because of my childhood architectural background, coupled with my lasting keen interest in architecture, I gained excellent achievements in the major courses of my college study, ranked top three in the class, and also received first prize scholarships and many other scholarships for five consecutive years. Besides, owing to my understanding of architecture, I am not satisfied with mere textbook knowledge. I believe architecture is not only a skill but also, more importantly, a combination of creativity and imagination. An excellent architecture designer needs not only solid architectural skills and knowledge, but also needs nourishment from fine arts, materials science, engineering and culture. For that purpose, I read quite extensively, understood the architectural history of different countries - especially European architectural history, learnt from works of modern and contemporary architectural masterpieces, and gained insights on their design conceptions that are full of creativity and connotation. The knowledge I have gained from these efforts heightens my interests and my desire for creation.

I had the opportunity to put to practice this desire for creation during the last stage of my college study. During the second semester of my fourth year, I interned with _ for half a year where I participated in the environmental design of the _ astronomical station and the conceptual design of the Phoenix Residential Complex in _. These experiences gave me insights into the relationship between a building‘s space and its functionality, as well as architectural design‘s feasibility, which is an important factor to consider when designing.

After graduating in 20_, I worked with an excellent architectural design institute, engaging in architectural design. In the meantime, I participated in the conceptual design and design drafts of the janitor’s room, the main machine hall of _ Company Ltd. I was also responsible for the design of the drafts of the multi-purpose hall in _ , _ and the renovation design of the _ Archives of the _. Because of my prominent achievements, I was quickly promoted as an exception from draftsmen to designer, and I later got the assistant engineer certificate in a short period of time.

The design experiences from these projects made me very interested in creatively applying materials in projects. Meanwhile, I also continuously learned new ideas in architecture from different countries, and especially saw a lot of design drawings of overseas architectural masters. All these experiences have a great impact on me, sparking my intention of studying abroad to learn more in-depth contemporary international architectural conceptions. I especially aspire to get to know in more detail modern western architectural history in the hopes of forming my own architectural conceptions.

Besides this, another intense desire of mine is to comprehensively learn the relationship between architecture and culture, and through the study of western architecture, to determine China‘s own architectural style. China once boasted of a developed ancient architecture, while its modern architecture loses the characteristics of its indigenous culture, a great deal of architecture lingers merely on the stage of rough and superficial imitation of western architecture. I hope to form a sort of architectural design conception with characteristics of China‘s traditional culture after extensively absorbing modern architectural theories and technologies. That is what I yearn to do and also what I believe I can make.

Yours sincerely,
