Our school library is a bright and quiet place. We can do some reading there. Look, in the middle of the big reading room stands a long desk. Some students are sitting at it. They are reading or writing something. At the further end is the Service Desk. The middle-aged woman behind the desk is the librarian.
She is serving students. She is a warm-hearted woman. The other young assistant is looking for some books for the students. To the right side of the desk, there are two bookshelves. Students can choose magazines or newspapers freely. Most of the students like reading and writing here because there are many helpful books here.
How to Use the Library
A library is a building for a collection of books, magazines, periodicals and newspapers. The books are kept on the shelves in the stack room whereas rihe magazines,journals,etc. in the reading rooms. Modern libraries also have xerox rooms, and computer rooms.
If you want to borrow books, you can go to the loan desk, look over the correct call numbers in the card catalog and ask the librarian to take them out for you. Or you＇re allowed to enter the stack room to find books for yourself, you can look up the bound volume of index for the articles relative to the subject, on which you are going to write a thesis. If the library doesn＇t subscribe to the magazine which carries the article you want, you can borrow the magazine from other libraries by means of interlibrary loan service. Don＇t forget to show your library card or . card to the librarian before you go into the reading room, where you can read magazines or newspapers. If you find a good article and want to keep it, you can have it duplicated in the xerox room. Besides, if you want to watch films or slides, you can ask the projectionist to play the videotape for you in theaudio-visual room, where you listen to language tapes and music tapes.
The new issues are so arranged that the students can see the covers of the current magazines. Daily newspapers are also in this area. There are eight comfortable chair and two tables for the student reading newspapers and periodicals. The card catalog is in the middle of the room just in front of the doors.
The cards are in alphabetical order according to the title of a book or periodical the author and the subject which makes it easier for the student to find the book they want. The major part of the room on the left is another study area. Beside four tables all books are on shelves in order. The shelves are called the stacks. This library has open stacks so that the students can look for books themselves. If you want to borrow or return books the librarians at the circulation desk will he at your service. If you want to photocopy some good articles from books you can go to the leftmost end of the room. The photocopy machine in the corner will do it for you.
We have summer vacation. My mother said that I should not only finish the homework assigned by the teacher, but also read some extra-curricular books, so that I can understand more.
Today, my mother didn't go to work, so she took me to the library. She asked me to choose some extra-curricular books I like and borrow them to read at home. When we got to the library, there were so many books in it. There were so many children reading books in the library. I chose three books, including stories of little heroes, fairy tales, and a book with a sharp brain turn. They were all books I like to read. My mother and I borrowed books and went home happily.
There has been a heated discussion about libraries at the age of information among people. Some people, especially the younger generation, challenge the value of conventional libraries. When they need any information in their studies or work, they can turn to their computers for help. For this reason, they do not need to go to a library for borrowing or returning one or two books.
While others, including most old people as well as scholars, value libraries. They love libraries because they can enjoy peace and quietness in an isolated spiritual world. And they also have access to rare academic works needed for their studies in the libraries.
In my view, conventional libraries are still available though there is still much room for improving. At the Age of Information, as long as knowledge is respected and cherished, libraries won’t extinct from our lives. On the other hand, libraries should not refuse the latest information technology, which will enable them to regain those young readers.
